Susumu Ariga, Ph.D., is Publisher and Editor of Engine Technology Progress in Japan (ETPJ). Originally from Kamakura, Japan, Dr. Ariga has been an engine engineer for more than 20 years. He is founder of Inter-Tech Energy Progress, Inc. (iTEP) and started publication of ETPJ in 1993 in San Antonio, Texas. Additionally, he began providing both consulting and engineering services for worldwide automotive industries in 1998 in the areas of engine research and development.

Prior to operating ITEP, Dr. Ariga was Program Manager of the Department of Engine Research and Manager of the Engine Technology Section at the Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) in San Antonio, Texas. He developed, conducted, and managed numerous engine research projects and programs in the areas of combustion and emissions, alternative fuels, engine tribology, and engine design after joining the SwRI staff in 1980. His significant accomplishments include development of an on-line oil consumption measurement system using the SO2 tracer method; development of a direct-injection, two-stroke, spark-assisted diesel engine with a patented rapid combustion system; and development of a non-lubricated cylinder kit design for an on-board truck air compressor. He has worked on various projects sponsored by both industries and governments, conducting research and development of various engines including light-, medium-, and heavy-duty diesel engines for on-highway and non-road applications; medium-speed diesel engines; spark-ignition engines; and outboard marine two-stroke engines, among others.

Dr. Ariga holds a B.S. and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Musashi Institute of Technology, Tokyo, Japan, and a B.S. in Automotive Engineering Technology from Weber State University in Ogden, Utah. He was a project member of the liquid hydrogen vehicle development team headed by Prof. Shoichi Furuhama at Musashi Institute of Technology. The project team participated in the Student Engineered Economy Design (SEED) rally sponsored by Western Washington University and the University of California at Los Angeles in 1975. Dr. Ariga drove the team car for about 1800 miles under rally conditions from Bellingham in Washington State to Los Angeles, California.

Dr. Ariga has published several technical papers with the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME)) and holds several patents in engine design. He is a member of SAE, U.S.A., Japan SAE, and the Japan Petroleum Institute, and is listed in International Who’s Who for Entrepreneurs.
