A COMPACT DRIVE UNIT DEVELOPED FOR HONDA'S FCEV
SKU: 12009107

Redesigned Drive Unit Demonstrates Increased Speed, Torque, Performance: A drive unit for application in the 2009 fuel-cell electric vehicle (FCEV) was developed at Honda for compact size, reduced weight, and low cost. A brushless DC motor was developed to reduce size and increase the power and rotating speed. By integrating the compact motor with the gearbox and power drive unit, the entire assembly of the drive unit became compact, thus shortening the vehicle height and front nose. Maximum vehicle speed was increased to 160 km/hour (100 mph) for the 2009 model. Engineers considered the balance of the range of gear ratios and friction to produce the maximum drive force required to accelerate the vehicle and achieve this vehicle speed. As a result, the maximum motor speed could be increased to 12,500 rpm. Because of the increased motor speed, the maximum torque could be increased to more than 256 Nm. This chapter reports various technologies developed to reduce the size of the drive unit and improve motor performance. The chapter consists of 12 pages including 16 figures and 2 tables.
