Ethanol Combustion Products Demonstrate Corrosion and Reduced Viscosity in Tests and Calculations: One caution in the use of ethanol is that the materials used for fuel system components need to be compatible with ethanol because ethanol reacts with some metals, resin, and rubber. Another related question is how the combustion products of ethanol affect engine components such as journal bearings when they mix with engine lubricating oil. Tests to investigate the effects these combustion products have on bearing materials and engine lubricating oil were conducted at Taiho Industries, and the results of corrosion and seizures tests are reported in this chapter.
